Best step challenge apps for workplaces in 2026: an honest comparison

Updated October 14, 2026 · 8 min

Key takeaways
  • There is no best app in absolute terms: a one-off challenge and a year-round program need different tools.
  • Only three of the ten vendors publish a complete price: Stridekick, Pacer for Teams and Ludo.
  • None of the international vendors compared mentions Canadian privacy law such as PIPEDA or Quebec Law 25.
  • A phone is enough to take part with most apps, a key point for employees without a smartwatch.
  • At Fromagerie Bergeron, 78.8% of employees took part in a Propulsion program in a manufacturing setting.

Choosing a workplace step challenge app looks simple until you compare the offers. Some are built for a two-week walking contest, others for a year-long wellness program. A few publish their prices; most ask for a quote. And very few say where your employees' data goes.

This comparison covers ten apps, checked on their official websites on October 14, 2026. One honest note before we start: Propulsion, which publishes this guide, is one of the vendors compared. That is why there is no overall winner here. Each app is presented for the need where it is strongest, with a real limitation.

What is a workplace step challenge app?

A workplace step challenge app lets an organization run a competition or a shared physical activity goal among its employees. Steps, active minutes or distance sync automatically from each participant's phone or watch, and an individual or team leaderboard updates in real time. The most complete platforms add health content, HR reports and a year-round challenge calendar.

Six criteria to choose

  • Taking part without a watch: some of your employees do not own a smartwatch. Check that a phone is enough and that active minutes can be logged manually.
  • Language: if part of your workforce speaks French, ask for a demo in French and check that the content was written for Canada.
  • Data and privacy law: where is activity data hosted, and what can the employer see? Canadian employers must meet PIPEDA, and Quebec's Law 25 requires an assessment before personal information leaves Quebec (section 17).
  • Fair leaderboards: ranking teams on the average per participant gives a small team the same chance as a large one.
  • HR workload: who builds the challenges, communicates with employees and produces the final report? A turnkey solution saves you hours.
  • Price: per active participant, per eligible employee or annual plan. Only three vendors in this comparison publish a complete price.

The apps one by one

Ludo: the local pick for collaboration

Built in Montreal for small businesses, Ludo offers four-week team challenges and more than 100 activities, scored on collaboration rather than step counts. Its pricing is public and simple. Limitation: the site names no wearable integration and no data commitment.

YuMuuv: international versatility

YuMuuv covers a wide range of challenges (steps, cycling, sleep, water, mindfulness) and connects to Apple Health, Garmin, Polar and Health Connect. It bills in Canadian dollars and only for registered users. Limitation: no mention of Canadian privacy law.

Pacer for Teams: the most transparent price

Pacer publishes an estimate (about US$454 per month for 100 participants) and a free seven-day trial. A phone is enough to take part. Limitation: data is hosted in the United States with no stated compliance commitment, which calls for a privacy assessment in Canada.

Stridekick: the cheapest for a small group

Stridekick offers eleven challenge modes and a free plan for up to ten participants. Limitation: team challenges require the Unlimited plan, on quote, and the site states neither languages nor compliance.

MoveSpring: device compatibility

MoveSpring, owned by Reward Gateway, connects to a long list of devices and holds ISO 27001 certification. Limitation: no public price.

United Heroes and Squadeasy: the French leaders

United Heroes shows the most complete security file in this comparison (ISO 27001, penetration testing, European hosting) and ties activity to donations or CO2 reduction. Squadeasy focuses on team spirit and sustainable mobility, hosted in France. Shared limitation: content written for France, and no public price.

Wellable and GoJoe: full English-language platforms

Wellable offers more than 40 challenges and rewards, with a per-user price shown and a one-year contract. GoJoe counts more than 80 activities and a very detailed privacy policy. Limitation: the Wellable app is offered in English and Spanish, without French, and GoJoe does not bill in Canadian dollars.

If you are evaluating Wellable for a full program, our comparison of eight Wellable alternatives accounts for French support and Canadian data hosting.

Challenge specialist or full platform?

If you need a one-off walking contest, a specialist such as Stridekick or Pacer for Teams is enough and costs less. If you want an active culture all year, with health content, a challenge calendar and reports for leadership, a full platform saves you from stacking tools. The question to ask: a year from now, do you want to have run a challenge, or built a program?

The Propulsion model

Propulsion is a Canadian platform built for the second need: a turnkey year-round program in French and English. Challenges combine four modes (team challenge, collective goal, challenge for a cause, environmental challenge) and four metrics (steps, active minutes, distance, points). The phone counts steps, Apple Health, Samsung Health, Garmin and more connect, and active minutes can be logged manually.

Health data is hosted in Canada. Propulsion is ISO/IEC 27001 certified, compliant with PIPEDA and Quebec Law 25, and its SOC 2 Type II audit is in progress. The employer sees aggregated results, never individual mood data. At Fromagerie Bergeron, a manufacturing employer, 78.8% of employees took part. Employees are active within two weeks of signing. Frequently asked questions

What is the best step challenge app for a Canadian workplace?

It depends on the need. For a one-off challenge on a small budget, Stridekick or Pacer for Teams. For a year-round bilingual program with data hosted in Canada, Propulsion. For a small business that values collaboration, Ludo.

Do employees need a smartwatch?

Not with most apps in this comparison. The phone counts steps, and several platforms let employees log active minutes manually. Check this in the demo, especially for plant or field employees.

How much does a step challenge app cost?

Public prices range from free (Stridekick, up to 10 participants) to about US$454 per month for 100 participants (Pacer for Teams). Ludo lists $50 per employee per year. Most full platforms work on quote, based on the size of the organization.

Does privacy law apply to activity data?

Yes. Activity data is personal information under PIPEDA, and in Quebec, Law 25 requires a privacy impact assessment before it is transferred outside the province (section 17). Ask every vendor where data is hosted and what the employer can see.
