Pink October: a month to talk about breast cancer at work

Every October, the pink ribbon is a reminder of the importance of screening and of support for people affected by breast cancer. In Canada, about one in eight women will be diagnosed during her lifetime. In an organization of 100 people, the issue inevitably touches a colleague, a loved one or a family.

Why Pink October matters to HR

Early detection changes outcomes, yet it often comes after work and family. Employers can remove concrete barriers: time off for an appointment, clear information about benefits, and a climate where people can talk about health without discomfort. Pink October is also a chance to plan the return to work of people in treatment.

5 Pink October activities for the workplace

1. Pink ribbon day Hand out ribbons or invite teams to wear pink on a chosen day. Simple, visible and unifying.

2. A fundraiser tied to movement Link every kilometre your teams walk or run to a donation to a recognized foundation. The collective effort gives the cause a concrete meaning.

3. A screening information session Invite a nurse or a representative from a recognized organization for a 30-minute talk, in person or online.

4. A clear reminder of resources Remind employees what your group insurance and EAP cover, and explain how to request time for a medical appointment.

5. A wall of support Create a space, physical or virtual, where employees can leave messages of encouragement for those affected.
