How is the ranking calculated in an inter-company challenge?

Updated October 1, 2026

The ranking is deliberately not a total of points. A 900-person organisation would beat a 40-person one every time, and the challenge would be decided before it started.

The formula

Total points ÷ full headcount

The divisor is the organisation's entire workforce, not the number of registered participants.

That single choice changes everything: the result is the average points per employee, which is the same as the average of participants multiplied by the participation rate.

What that means in practice

Two levers, and the second is usually the cheaper one:

  1. Get your colleagues moving more (raise the average)
  2. Get more colleagues to take part at all (raise the participation rate)

A company where 30 % of staff are very active loses to a comparable company where 70 % walk moderately. Convincing an inactive colleague to sign up moves the needle more than a personal extra effort.

Why the full headcount and not participants only

Dividing by participants would reward registering only your most athletic employees. Dividing by headcount rewards including everyone, which is the point of the exercise.

Size brackets

Organisations compete within their own bracket:

  • 0 to 50 employees
  • 51 to 250
  • 251 to 1000
  • 1001 and above

A small team does not compete against a large corporation. Culture and internal mobilisation work very differently at those scales.

Where to see your standing

The challenge page shows your organisation's ranking within its bracket, and its participation rate.
